Skilled migration program July 2012, major change SkillSelect

Australia has managed its skilled migration program since July 2012 with a major change – SkillSelect.

What is SkillSelect?

SkillSelect is an online service that helps skilled workers and business people interested in migrating to Australia to give the details that will allow them to be considered for a skilled visa through an Expression of Interest (EOI).

Australian employers or state and territory governments can then find the skilled migrants and nominate them for Australian skilled visas, or they may be invited by the Australian Government to send a visa application.

From 1 July 2012, all intending migrants interested in the points based skilled migration or business investment and innovation visa programs have to submit an EOI and receive an invitation in order to lodge a visa application.

Skillselect reduces the time to process a visa application, helps employers

SkillSelect ensures that the migration program corresponds with Australia’s economic needs. It will help the Australian Government’s Department of Immigration and Citizenship to significantly reduce the time taken to process a visa application.

This program will also allow the future migrants to state if they are willing to live and work in regional Australia. It will help Employers who suffer from regional skill shortages and state and territory governments attempting to settle migrants in regional Australia.

What is an EOI?

With EOI skilled migrants indicate that they would like to be considered for a skilled visa. EOI is NOT a visa application.

The skilled migrants to be will have to provide a range of information in the EOI depending on the visa(s) they want to be considered for, such as:

  • Basic personal information

  • Nominated occupation

  • Work experience

  • Study and education

  • Level of English skills

  • Details of a Skills Assessment, related to your nominated occupation

  • Business and investment experience.

Points Test

For the points based skilled migration and business innovation and investment visa programs, you will be ranked according to the appropriate points test. You will be able to submit an EOI even if you do not meet the pass mark; however, you will not be invited to apply for a visa.

Also an important thing to know is that meeting the points test pass mark does not guarantee you an invitation to apply for a visa.

Nominated Occupation

If you are submitting an EOI for a visa that requires you to list a nominated occupation you should establish if your occupation is a skill that Australia needs. You can do this by checking the Skilled Occupation Lists.  You must provide details of a Skills Assessment relating to your nominated occupation in your EOI.
